It is with greatest sadness that we announce the passing of Francis Toung Fee Leong on May 20, 2025 at home at the age of 75. He is survived by his wife, Angela and his two sons, Jonathan and Joshua, as well as his siblings both in Canada and England. His departure was very peaceful.
Francis was born in Calcutta, India. His mother was also born there while his father had emigrated from China to the country in his younger days. Francis grew up in a large family. His parents had 16 children born to them. Francis was the 5th son and the 9th child of his parents. He spent his childhood in his birth country before emigrating to England with his family. They had also lived briefly in Hong Kong before settling down in England. After completing secondary school and matriculation in England, Francis had worked as a bank clerk there. In 1976, he emigrated to Canada and had since made Canada his permanent home. While Francis had worked in other sectors including accounting in Canada, he had dedicated about 40 years to his career as an insurance agent and became semi-retired in the past few years. The fact that he spoke Taishanese, the dialect of his father’s hometown, as well as Cantonese had enabled him to build a good clientele among the Chinese community.
Francis enjoyed watching sports. He was a great hockey fan and rejoiced when the Canucks made it to the playoffs. He was a self-taught photographer and had helped his friends with taking pictures on special occasions such as weddings. He loved spicy foods especially curry and was keen on experimenting with different curry recipes. He was good at woodworking, which he had learned in his secondary school days. With such skills he became a handyman who often did repairs and small jobs around his home. That was his way of saying that he loved his family. He enjoyed gardening in the summer. He had a passion and the skills for growing roses, which he had brought along with him from England. His favourite specie of rose is “Fragrant Cloud”, which was often the protagonist of his tiny little garden at home.
Francis was a most kind-hearted person who was always willing to lend a helping hand. He had a soul as beautiful as the roses he grew. We love you, Francis, you will be greatly missed.
