With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Ida Tonks, affectionately known as "Jimmy" to her family and close friends. Born on December 12, 1922, in Port of Spain, Trinidad, West Indies, Ida was the eldest of three sisters and the last surviving member of her siblings.
Ida had a lifelong passion for teaching, which led her to earn her Montessori teaching degree. She opened her first school, Miss Daunt’s Private School, in Trinidad, and later, a highly successful Montessori school on the island of Tobago. Alongside her dedication to education, Ida was an accomplished athlete, representing Trinidad and Tobago on the International Women's Field Hockey Team.
Her love for the arts was evident in her beautiful singing voice and her enthusiasm for theater. Ida also shared her passion for education and the arts by teaching Sunday school and producing religious pageants with the children.
In 1955, Ida married Basil Tonks, an Anglican priest. Together, they became a beloved team, sharing their faith and serving in parishes throughout Trinidad and Tobago, including work with the Mission for Seamen. They were blessed with four children and built a life centered on family, faith, church, and service to others.
In 1969, the family relocated to Canada. There, Ida and Basil continued their church work. Many happy memories and lasting friendships were made at St. Giles and St. Thomas, Shanty Bay. In that time, Basil was appointed Archdeacon of Simcoe County and eventually elected as Suffragan Bishop of the Credit Valley in Toronto. After Basil’s passing in 1986, Ida remained active in the church, contributing to the Leprosy Mission, giving spiritual talks, and writing columns for the local newspaper.
We thank God for her many years of compassion, empathy, and service to others. Though her earthly work has ended, we are sure God has further plans for her.
Ida passed away peacefully on November 7 in Vancouver, Canada. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Teresa, Bernard, Catherine, Basil, her granddaughter, Cilla and her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
