Joanie passed away peacefully in her sleep, at home, without apparent pain. She was diagnosed with Addison's Disease eight years ago and more recently with Dementia. She managed both conditions in her normal fashion which meant she never complained she simply carried on and dealt with what had been thrown at her unpleasant as it might be. She had encountered numerous traumatic events largely driven by her Addison’s and her body simply said that’s enough.
She is survived by Bruce her husband of 53 years as well as her children Jane (Chris & Finley), Mark, Carolyn (Troy), her sister(soulmate) Sandra Dumont as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Stan (2017).
Joanie was a true Vancouver “kid” having been born at St. Paul’s Hospital then attending Maple Grove and McKechnie Elementary Schools and graduating from Magee High School. She grew up on West 54th Avenue and essentially lived in the same postal code for her life. She was truly a “family first” person as that was the focus of her attention and she was always at any sporting or school event for her children…. all kids in the neighbourhood knew what a “Joanie Cookie” was. She was an active walker, reader and gardener. Her favourite place to be was the family home on Bowen Island where she spent 40+ summers with family and many fall and spring days enjoying a good book but always positioned very(very) close to the fireplace. She loved her walk & talk with her friends around the “loop” where they solved most of the world’s issues on a daily basis. She also loved to be at Pebbly Beach watching her adored grandson Finley in the water or just being with him as being a grandmother was a role she truly loved. A big part of her family were her pets as she was a true lover of cats and dogs and other than spiders would bring anything with four legs home.
