Kam Ping was born on October 17, 1926 in Hong Kong, the youngest of 14 children. Her family had a fruit shop where she developed a life long ability to select the very best produce. During the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, she had to learn some Japanese. Even into her later years she would be able to greet someone in the language with ease.
When Kam Ping was 19 years old, she married Mr. Wah Chan. In the following years she became a mother to five children: Margaret, Michael, Vincent, Philip and Henry. She was a loving parent who placed great importance on education and Catholic values. She believed deeply in fairness and generosity, and she cared for each of her children and grandchildren with equal thoughtfulness. Uncommon for women of her time, she drove and faithfully chauffeured her children to school and different activities.
In the late 1970s, she immigrated to Vancouver, Canada, with her husband. There, she cared for him during his extended period of ill health with unwavering devotion. After his passing in 1991, she embraced a new chapter of life, traveling to many countries and visiting friends and family near and far.
A woman of many accomplishments and talents, Kam Ping enjoyed Chinese calligraphy, painting, knitting, and tai chi. Whatever she pursued, she approached with focus, patience, and care. She was meticulous, steady, and always dependable—someone who showed up and was always on time.
She was an exceptional cook who delighted in bringing people together. Over the years, she hosted countless meals, celebrating occasions large and small. Known for her kindness and sociability, she made everyone feel welcome—especially the many friends of her children and grandchildren. Her warm and inclusive nature ensured that her home was always full of life. Many who met her remember her with lasting affection.
She also loved hosting mahjong gatherings with her friends. Well into her 90s, when her friends were no longer able to travel on their own, she would personally drive to pick each of them up, bring them to her home to play and share a meal, and then drive them safely back.
Kam Ping lived a long and full life. With deep faith, quiet strength, and profound love, she built a strong and enduring family. We are all richer for having witnessed how she lived—she showed us how to love one another, to live with compassion and understanding, and to find joy in both the small and the great moments of life.
Mrs. Chan is predeceased by her husband, Wah Chan. She is lovingly survived by her children: Margaret and her husband James; Michael and his wife Betsy; Vincent and his wife Pauline; Philip and his wife Donna; and Henry and his wife Connie. She was a cherished grandmother to Vivian (Gordon), Winnie (Chris), Brian (Beckie), Andy (Ada), Alex (Iris), Kevin (Tricia), Jessica (Quang), Kristine (Arthur), and Liz (Mason). She was also blessed with twelve great‑grandchildren: Ellis, Gabe, Miles, James, Theo, Leo, Warren, Simon, Joseph, Cosmo, Eliot, and Caia.
Mrs. Kam Ping Chan now rests peacefully with God. Her life remains a source of inspiration to all who were blessed to know her.
For those who wish to 屏send flowers to Corpus Christi Church, or make a donation in lieu, the family is deeply grateful for your thoughtfulness.
