It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dear elder Lucy ‘Emily’ Baker (nee Nelson). Emily descends from the Kwakwaka’wakw Hunt, Smith & Nelson families. Emily was born to her parents Alex Hunt and Grace (nee Nelson) on May 29, 1921 at Alert Bay and passed away peacefully on January 17, 2018 at North Shore Hospice surrounded by love of family and friends. Emily grew up in Alert Bay, Fort Rupert and Kingcome Inlet and was rich in her culture and teachings and attended St. Michael’s Indian Residential School in Alert Bay. As a young lady she came to Squamish Nation where she married her late husband Daniel Baker (36 years). Together they raised their family on Capilano IR #5 and Emily is a true matriarch and a proud teacher of custom, tradition and language. Emily was an avid supporter of sports and attended many games in lacrosse, basketball and soft ball; but she also supported community events with elders programs, ocean canoe gatherings, war canoe races and pow-wows. She believed in the importance of education and development of students and annually contributed scholarships and bursaries towards students enrolling in post secondary studies. Emily enriched Squamish traditions and values with her teachings from her family to her children, grandchild and enriched our communities.
