Mathias Joe / Hall & Baker Families
Mary Judith ‘Judy’ Baker (nee Mathias Joe)
‘Princess of Capilano’
Sunrise: March 12, 1943 - Sunset: December 7, 2020
It is with great sadness we advise of the passing of our dear Elder and Matriarch of the Mathias Joe family Mary Judith Baker (nee Mathias Joe). She was born to her mother Rosy ‘Posie’ Joe and being the granddaughter of Chief Mathias Joe and Ellen (nee Hall) Judy was fondly referred to as ‘the Princess of Capilano’. She grew up in Xwmélch’sten (Capilano IR No. 5) on the beach area. She attended for a brief time St. Paul’s Indian Day School but primarily attended West Vancouver schools with her cousin Sonny Joe. Judy worked in the fish cannery; the St. Alice Hotel and Squamish Nation Youth Centre. She played softball and slow pitch with the reserve teams like the Bells and Skyliners and supported nephews and son in lacrosse. She loved music and dancing and actually won a dance contest for ‘the stroll’ at a place called ‘Danceland’. She also performed with family in traditional Indian dance and song at public events – prestigious events. She also supported her son’s interests in music and the ‘Electric Warrior’ Rock Band. Judy will best be remembered for the way she could make everyone feel so special with her loving and caring nature.
Judy was 19 years old when she married her love Gary Brian Baker (they were married 59 years); she is also survived by her son Gary Mathias Ray Baker ‘Boo Boo’; Grandsons Ray Richard Baker and Noah Gary James Baker; granddaughter Paige Alfreda Judith Baker; Daughter-In-Law Suzanne Patricia Nahanee; sister Margaret Prince (nee: Joe) (Bob); nephews Donald Leo James Mathias (Susan), Wayland Robert Noland Mathias-Joe; William Gary Prince; Grand Nieces & Nephews Amelia Rose Joe, Chelsea Solomon, Brett Sparrow, Laura Ann Margaret Mathias-Joe, Wayland Bob Mathias-Joe, William Alexander ‘Billy’ Mathias-Joe, Damon William Christian Prince; special daughter Jenny ‘Gabby’ Guss; and many loving relatives and dear friends.
