Lucy was born in Rach Gia, Vietnam on June 15, 1948 with the name Phuong Luc to father Chau Luc and mother Yen Trinh. She possessed a fervent love for cooking, often assisting her mother with preparing meals for her large family of five girls and four boys. At Minh Duc Middle School in Rach Gia, Lucy's intelligence and diligence led her to be ranked among the top five students in her class, while her sister noted her as the most beautiful girl in class, attracting admiration from many boys. After graduating in 1967, she selflessly relinquished this dream of higher education due to familial financial constraints, ensuring her younger sister's opportunities. She then relocated, finding a position at Can Tho Tho Nhan Chinese School, where she embarked on a teaching career. It was during this time that a fellow teacher Alfred pursued her affection, leading to their marriage in 1975 after an eight-year courtship.
In 1976, Lucy became a mother, giving birth to their first child, Grace, and in 1978, Lucy and Alfred welcomed their first son, Lap. After the Vietnam war, Lucy and her family fled Vietnam in 1979 with Alfred’s extended family on an overcrowded boat to escape persecution. Having reached a refugee camp in Malaysia, her family was sponsored to emigrate to Canada in 1980 with the help of four generous Canadian families. In 1982, after a miscarriage during her emigration, she and Alfred welcomed their third child, Duran.
Living in Canada, along with the duties of motherhood, Lucy took on a full time job working hard as a night-shift janitor for more than 10 years to help provide for her family. During the early 2000s, Lucy was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, necessitating numerous surgeries on her hands and legs and eventually leading to her retirement. In 2020, she faced another challenge when diagnosed with cancer, undergoing surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation over the following four years to combat the disease. Sadly, in March 2024, her health struggles, including cancer, proved insurmountable, and she succumbed to her illnesses.
Lucy leaves behind her daughter Grace (Gilbert) Lee Kwen, her son Lap (Leanna) Cheung, her son Duran (Rebecca) Cheung, and her grandchildren Gavin, Grayson, Leland, Xavier and Mia. She is also survived by her eldest sister Anh, the third sister Chi, the third brother Kien, the fourth brother Tan, the fifth brother Thanh, the fourth sister Lan, and the youngest sister Doan, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She is now able to join her parents, her oldest brother Vui, and her beloved husband, Alfred in heaven.
Lucy's life was marked by her compassionate and selfless nature, evident in her unwavering readiness to support family members in times of need, always placing their well-being above her own. Her boundless love for her family leaves a void that will be deeply felt by all who knew her and she will be missed dearly.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared below for the Cheung Loc family.
As an expression of sympathy, a donation in Phuong's memory may be made to the BC Cancer Agency and would be greatly appreciated by the family.
