Renato was born in Porac, Philippines in 1946 to Silvestre Pineda and Margarita Mercado. He was the youngest of his two siblings and lost his mother at a very young age. Renato’s dad later remarried Felisa and he became an older brother to four more siblings.
With the help of his sister Sonia, he graduated from the University of the East in 1971 with a degree of Bachelor of Business Administration and later arrived in Canada 1975. In turn, he helped put his sister Bernadette through her schooling. He worked at various hotels in several accounting and front desk positions.
Renato married Josephine, his university sweetheart in 1978. Over five years, the couple welcomed three children into their home and Renato set about teaching them to live purposely through simple acts of kindness and finding richness in life’s experiences. His children remember him as a kind and generous father who put others first and always made sure his friends and family were well fed.
Renato was accomplished at being a handyman and gardener and often kept busy with home projects. He was a prankster who loved to surprise his family and make everyone laugh. He was passionate about family and connecting with loved ones all over the world, and especially loved going back to his hometown to enjoy the Porac fiesta. His perfect day would involve a visit to Hastings Race Park followed by a family meal at White Spot. He would often be found on his many computers, listening to music, watching movies, or reading his books.
Renato is lovingly remembered by his wife, Josephine; children, Margaret, Jonathan (JJ), Jeffrey (JR); siblings, Sonia, Eddie, Guillermo (Lermie), Bernadette and Edgar.
