Mr. Shing Moyung was born in Zhaoqing City, Guangdong Province in 1932. He is the second oldest in a family of six, with an older sister and four younger brothers. In order to secure a better life for himself and his family, he left home at the age of 16, moved to Hong Kong, and worked different jobs while staying with his aunt. Not only did he support himself, he also provided financially for his family back home and completed a post-secondary diploma through studying at a night school.
He married Ms. Esther Lai Tuen Ng in 1963 in Hong Kong and started his own family. Their parents were family friends back in mainland China so they had known each other since childhood, and only started dating after they both moved to Hong Kong.
Shing was a hard working man with a passion for people. His sincerity, care, and generosity towards friends and family not only earned him respect but also reciprocity in times of need. He was highly regarded by his superiors, clients, and staff, leading to a successful career in the garment industry. In 1970, he founded his own garment manufacturing and trading business.
Just like how he wanted a better life for his childhood family and moved to Hong Kong during his teen years, he immigrated again to Vancouver, Canada in 1985 with his own family. He traveled back and forth between Hong Kong and Canada to maintain his business, until 1992 when he decided to close the business permanently to retire and spend time with his family in Vancouver.
He did not have many hobbies, but he enjoyed playing Mahjong on the weekends with his friends and took his family to the beaches when he was back in Hong Kong. He also traveled frequently to Europe and Asia for business over the course of his career. Although English is not his first language, he was able to meet many friends abroad and was well versed in the customs and culture of many foreign countries. He continued this passion during his retirement and traveled extensively with his wife, including frequent travels to Toronto to visit his daughters and families, and participated in many of his grandchildren’s important milestones.
Regrettably, he was unable to attend his eldest grandson, Kester’s wedding in 2023 in Toronto due to mobility challenges after suffering from a stroke in 2021. Thankfully, the newlyweds were able to serve him tea in a traditional Chinese tea ceremony when they visited him at his long term care home in the same summer.
Even though his passing on December 26, 2023, occurred very unexpectedly, we are comforted in knowing that he left peacefully without suffering. He will be dearly missed, but he will forever leave a legacy in our lives for his love, wisdom, and personal character of integrity and generosity.
