Susan Margaret Steiner (née Graseby) departed this life suddenly and peacefully on April 15, 2025 surrounded by her family at St Paul’s Hospital. She leaves behind her husband of 63 years (Ivan), her two children (Francis and Nicole), and her six grandchildren (Olivia, Giselle, Harrison, Lucas, Juliet, and Gwyneth), as well as a community who loved her dearly.
Susan was born in Guilford, England in 1939, and met Ivan while working in London at the Strand Palace Hotel. After having their children in the UK, Ivan and Susan moved to Toronto in March 1968. They later moved to Vancouver in 1996 to be closer to family. Susan's priority was always her family; she was a loving wife, an attentive mother, and a devoted grandmother, and she never missed a Sunday family dinner. Her strength, thoughtfulness, knowledgeability, joy, and cheekiness were amongst her most memorable qualities.
She was a lifelong retailer, selling furniture and later yarn as she had a passion for fashion and knitting. Her hand-knitted sweaters and socks are cherished by her family members. Susan had a love of puzzles, books, and learning. She was always excited to share and discuss news, world events, and the latest 60 minutes or BBC documentary. She loved all cats and was known to occasionally call her son and grandchildren by her long-deceased cat’s name, Smudgie. Susan was a world traveller and went on many adventures with her husband and her family. She was incredibly loved and will be missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held in October; details will be shared at a later time.
