HANNEMANN, Water Fritz Theodore Johannes, age 93, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, BC. Walter was born on May 2, 1926 in the Free State of Danzig, which is now Gdansk, Poland.
At the age of 16 he was conscripted by the German Army to serve in WWII on the eastern front. He served from 1943 – 1945. After WWII ended our father went to Bavaria to work and study Forestry. He also studied in Sweden from 1952 – 1954. In 1954 he immigrated to Canada, landing in Nova Scotia on his 27th birthday. From there our father travelled to Toronto where he worked in a lumber mill for six months before travelling to Vancouver, BC. He met our mother in 1955 at the Martin Luther Church in Vancouver, BC. They were married in the same church in July 1956 and were happily married for 50 years.
After arriving in BC, Dad worked for McMillan Bloedel, Silvertree Sawmills and J.H. Todd & Sons. In 1964 he started work for the Federal Government in Income Tax as an Auditor and worked there until his retirement in 1990 due to health problems. After his retirement our father enjoyed genealogy and spent many years researching his family tree. He loved his music, old films and travelling. He was a great reader, especially anything to do with history. Most importantly our father loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Predeceased by his wife Annellie Hannemann (Nagel/Marquardt 2006), his father Willy Hannemann (1945), mother Anna Hannemann (Geortz 1948) and his half-brother Albert Goertz (1939) his niece Sigrid Singam of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2016).
He is survived by his beloved sister Eva Maria O’Neill (age 91) in London, England; son Warren and daughter Anna (Robbie); his step-son Gerhardt Horst Marquardt (Carol); Grandchildren Lisa Marquardt, Christopher Marquardt, Emilie Darbey (Ben) and Nadia Lintan; Great Grandchildren Aidan and Aliana Darbey along with many nieces, nephews and friends here and abroad.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Royal Columbian Hospital on “6 South” for the loving care of our father during these difficult weeks before his death. There are too many to mention by name, but you all know who you are.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, December 27 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 1573 East 18th Avenue, Vancouver, BC at 11:00 am with burial to follow at 1:30 pm Ocean View Burial Park, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby, BC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the BC Cancer Agency, the Union Gospel Mission or the Royal Columbian Hospital.
Even though we as a family are sad that our Papa and Opa and Gross-Opa is gone, he lived a full and remarkable life
