Stewart was born in Louisville, KY, on March 31, 1931. He was the second-born son of Edward Jr. and Ruth (Squire) Haag.He graduated from duPont Manual High School where he was a member of the class of ‘48 ½ . Stew grabbed hold of Jesus’ hand when he was a “wee shaver” at Christ Church Sunday School and never let go. Likewise, Stew caught his passion for radio at an early age, getting his first FCC Amateur Radio license in 1947.
Stew followed his passion for radio into his 44 year career at South Central Bell (later AT&T) as a radio telephone technician. A model of industriousness, he worked nights at the phone company and repaired TVs on the side, then later established a successful two-way radio business.
Stew met his sweetheart, Esther Bielefeld, at Church Camp and they were married on Dec 1, 1956. A faithful husband and providing father, Stew kept the home fires burning by running his “second job” in the basement. His children and grandchildren always knew where to find him.
Consistently prepared to help others, Stew connected missionaries to loved ones at home on a “phone patch” and maintained and operated amateur repeaters, helping with sometimes life-saving communications. He supported family members in times of need, donated electronics and radios to numerous organizations, and in retirement, built and repaired computers for anyone who walked into his shop.
Active in Boy Scouts, church youth groups, Naval Reserves, Amateur Radio, Hamfests, satellite radio and lots of family get-togethers, Stew led a fulfilling and purposeful life.
Stew was predeceased by his parents, brothers, Edward William III, Robert Edward, and wife, Esther. He is survived by his four children, Mark (Susan) Haag of Sharpsburg, GA, Leah Haag of Jeffersontown, KY, David (Ravita) Haag of Venice, FL, and Stewart Robert Haag of Louisville, KY, four grandchildren, Jonathan (Margarita) Haag, Michael (Kristin) Haag, Meagan (Rhodes) Thompson, and Courtney (Pat) Billig, and nine great-grandchildren, Wilder, Lincoln, Benjamin, Ryder, Betty, Sebastian, Logan, Amayra and Kylie.
Stewart will be remembered fondly by his family and friends. His inurnment will be at Resthaven Memorial Park in Louisville, KY, next to Esther. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Tidewell Hospice or your local hospice.
