

Born in Los Angeles on July 18, 1925, Alvan joined the United States Navy at the age of seventeen and served as a Seaman First Class aboard two sea plane tenders, the U.S.S. Yakutat and The U.S.S. Corson. Following his three-plus years in the Navy, Al returned to Los Angeles where he eventually found work with United Parcel Service in 1948.
Al met the love of his life, Sue Christie of Los Angeles on a blind date in 1948. They were married two years later and settled in their new home in Reseda where
two of their three children were born. They relocated to Canoga Park in 1961 where their last child was born in 1965.
The family moved to Ventura in 1978 after Al was transferred to the UPS Ventura Center. He continued with UPS as a driver for 29 years and in customer service for nine years, retiring in 1986. Al enjoyed bowling and had been on several leagues at Buena Lanes. He was an honorary member of the Olivas Adobe Historical Society and also served as a Ventura Police Department volunteer in the Montalvo storefront location for several years.
A sweet, humorous and unassuming man, Al especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sue Pench of Ventura; daughter and son-in-law, Dori and Howard Hoffman of Roseville; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Beth Pench of Sacramento and Philip and Debbie Manis Pench of Simi Valley; five grandchildren, Melissa, Tiffany, Eric, Ryan, and Cameron and great-granddaughter, Hannah. He is also survived by his sister Bernell Quincy of Bakersfield.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 23, 2:00 P.M. at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura, with The Reverend Curtis Hotchkiss officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Private burial with military honors will take place at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park.
