Barbara was born in Denver, Colorado, August 2, 1925 and passed with family by her side the night of February 12, 2018. Her parents, Ray and Myrtle Campbell, along with Barbara and her sister, Valerie, soon moved to Ventura where she attended grammar and high school. She graduated with the class of 1943. Barbara then attended Oregon State College before returning to Ventura to work at the Post Office and Naval Base until the end of WWII.
Barbara, also known as Babs, met her future husband Les Culbert, a P-38 pilot, in September of 1944 prior to his departure to Europe. Les returned in 1946 and they were married in May of 1947. Les and Babs farmed in the Las Posas Valley near Somis for over 66 years. She continued to live in the original farm house that was built in 1916 until October of 2017.
Babs and Les were proud parents of three children, Sharlee Carnes, Meredith Horton, and Michael Culbert. They have nine grandchildren and many wonderful great grandchildren.
While her children were attending Mesa Union School, Babs helped form the Mesa Mother’s Club. She also taught Sunday School at the Ventura First Baptist Church for many years. She was a volunteer at Pleasant Valley Hospital for over 30 years, accumulating over 7000 hours. Babs was proud to honored as a Camarillo Dona by the Camarillo Historical Society. Her participation in P.E.O. skits always brought a smile. She was also active in the National Charity League.
She was a great wife and best friend to Les and a wonderful mother and fabulous cook.
Babs will be forever remembered and greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Atria Las Posas for their kind and loving care.
