Carl Brubaker lived a rich, full life of 97 years. Life was good as a young boy growing up in the rural area of Prairie City, Iowa. He liked to share his childhood memories of growing up in a large family, eight brothers and two sisters, and of his mother’s great cooking.
He was a mischievous boy and shared many “adventures” with his brothers and sister, and his cousin Ralph. When Carl was four, he survived the flu epidemic of 1918. Sadly, during that time two of his siblings passed away on the same day
Carl was a World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Army as a communication’s tech. He helped place miles of cable in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe.
After the war he worked for Allis-Chalmers Tractors, as a service representative. Later after he retired, Carl worked part time at Sears as a sales clerk, in Santa Maria and Oxnard.
Carl was famously known about town for his dapper looks in a red sweater and hat. His positive outlook on life was his greatest asset. No matter how much sorrow or health problems he faced, he always had a big smile on his face and looked forward to better days. He had a strong faith in the Lord, and going to church was important to him as both of Carl’s Grandfathers were ministers.
Carl was preceded in death by his first wife of 34 years, Helen Brubaker who passed away in 1981; his second wife of 15 years, Vivian Brubaker, passed away in 2002; His parents, Earl and Maime Brubaker of Prairie City, Iowa; sister Anna, and five brothers: Everett, Laverne, Price, Leo, and Marvin.
He is survived by his step daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Tony Patton of Ventura; grandson, Toby Patton(wife Keli) of Edmond, OK; granddaughter, Shawna Nichols (husband Jeff) of Ventura, CA; five great grandchildren, Harleigh, Eli, and Cole of Edmond, OK; Holden and Rylan of Ventura, CA; sister, Opal Goodrich of Prairie City, Iowa; brothers, Merlin Brubaker (wife Vivian) of Bettendorf, Iowa and Doyle Brubaker (wife Maxine) of Newton, Iowa; he is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and many good friends, including Buster and Sue Ellen Hayslett of Camarillo, CA, who he considered his extended family.
Special thanks to the staff of Moran Manor and Cypress Place Assisted Living for their loving care and concern for Carl’s well-being. Thanks as well to Livingston Hospice Nurse Janet, Dr. Becky Wade, Dr. Martin Greaney, Dr. Brant Gerken, Pastor Jim Duran, and The Reverend Dr. Leonard DeWitt for their loving care and prayers over many years.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Ste. 300, Jacksonville, FL, 32256, [email protected].
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 29, 2012 at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. With visitation beginning at 9:30 A.M. followed by a chapel service at 10:30 A.M. with The Reverend Dr. Leonard DeWitt officiating.
