

Charles is survived by his daughters, Lesley and husband John Brabyn of Bodega, CA and Valerie and husband Gaylord Townley of Tamarindo, Costa Rica; sons, Jeffrey Barnes of Ventura, Kevin Sage of Channel Islands, Tony Barnes of Ventura, Dallas and wife Tiana Barnes of Ventura and Joshua and wife Ambar Barnes of Ventura: and sister, Marianne Noakes of Nebraska . He is preceded in death by his wives, Sally Barnes and Gabrielle Maulhardt, brothers Martin Barnes, Richard Barnes and Tom Barnes of Ventura.
He was born on November 19, 1921 in Los Angeles, CA, to Thomas Coventry Barnes and Elizabeth Matilda (Bergman) Barnes. He married Gabrielle Maulhardt in 1948 after returning from World War II as a highly decorated Air Force pilot, where he flew 69 commissioned missions and 73 in all.
Charles graduated from Pomona College in 1948 with a degree in Bio Chemistry, followed by his MD at McGill University in Montreal, Canada in 1953. After graduation, he and Gabrielle moved to St. Louis, MO, where he started his first medical practice. In 1959, they moved back to California with their daughter, Lesley and had two more children, Jeffrey and Tony. Charles remarried in 1971 to Sally Barnes, adding three more to their family via Sally's previous marriage: Lori, Valerie and Kevin. He had two more children with Sally: Dallas and Joshua. Charles leaves a legacy of eight children, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.
After moving to Ventura, Charles began building his practice as a world class ophthalmologist, professor at UCLA, teacher, leader, father and philanthropist. He attended Ventura Missionary Church with his brother most Sundays. Charles donated his time to helping people all over the world see better and be better, he treated the mentally ill, indigent and less fortunate. He loved practicing medicine, traveling, reading, camping, woodworking, hunting, enjoyed his family and his faithful dog, "Morgan."
Charles also donated his time through Med-core at the King Khaled Eye Institute in Ryadh as well as the Beni-Messous Hospital in Algiers, Habitat for Humanity for Hurricane Katrina relief. He also donated his time and money to Boystown, Church, schools and other charities.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2014, 2:00pm, at Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura, with a reception to follow. His pastor, The Reverend Gary Archer from Ventura Missionary Church will officiate the ceremony. Military Honors will be rendered by the 1st Memorial Honor Detail.
