Christopher Alan Prewitt, 38 years old, born…to live life to the fullest! He was born December 3, 1975, in San Diego, California. Chris was foremost a loving and devoted husband and father. He was married for 15 years to Erin and Daddy to Isabella “Izzy” for seven short years. He was an amazing son and brother. Chris is also survived by his father Choyce, stepmom Maureen, his mum Isabel and her partner Becky, his sister Amy, his step siblings, his in-laws Tom and Kathleen Koenig, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nieces and nephews, and many more who truly loved him.
Chris grew up in Ventura, graduated from Buena High School in 1993, attended Ventura College, where he met the love of his life, Erin, and graduated from Humboldt University with his Bachelor’s degree in Social Science and then pursued his teaching credentials at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He always knew he wanted to be a teacher, one of his many passions.
Chris returned to his roots and began his teaching career at Nordhoff High School in Ojai. He then continued on to Foothill Technology High School, where he taught for nine years and during that time he received his Master’s degree in teaching administration from Cal State Northridge. Two years ago, he became the vice principal of De Anza Academy of Technology and the Arts.
Chris lost most of his hearing at an early age and began wearing hearing aids. However, he did not let his hearing loss stop him from loving and pursuing his dreams. He loved the water and he began swimming at an early age, which led him to compete on the water polo and swim teams at Buena High School. Water polo became the focus of his sports career. He continued to play water polo for Ventura College, and competed on the U.S. men’s water polo team in the Deaflympics for many years, which is recognized as an international multisport event. Chris won a silver medal in the Copenhagen world games in 1997. He began coaching girls water polo when he started teaching at Nordhoff High School and then for the girls’ water polo team at Buena. Chris inspired many during his years of playing and coaching. He was known for playing with all heart and that reflected in his coaching as well.
Chris just embraced life unconditionally with a positive attitude and a big smile. The way he lived and shared who he was and what he was up to was contagious. He was dedicated to his family, friends, colleagues, and students. He was just there for you. Chris’ request to all of us is to honor who he was by jumping in and living your life to the fullest.
A celebration of Chris’ life will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014, 10 o’clock in the morning at Buena High School stadium in Ventura, California.
In lieu of flowers, Erin’s family has established an account to support Erin & her daughter Izzy at www.youcaring.com/other/remembering-chris-prewitt/161219.
