Donald Milton Grant passed away after a short illness on May 25, 2018. Don was a wonderful, thoughtful spouse, a devoted father, and a great friend to many. He was brilliantly funny, generous, and charming. He loved animals, and they loved him.
Don was born on November 14, 1934, in Oakland, CA, to Milton John Grant and Helen Margaret Grant (née Sullivan). He attended the University of California, Berkeley, on an ROTC scholarship and graduated in 1956. Don then served in the Marine Corps as an artillery officer. He retired from the Corps in 1968 as a Captain.
After working briefly for the California Public Utilities Commission, Don completed his law degree at the University of San Francisco, then moved to Ventura, CA, and began his 38-year career as a Deputy District Attorney. After retiring from the District Attorney’s Office he worked as a Mental Health Hearing Officer and Temporary Judge for the Superior Court of California, County of Ventura.
Don married Anita Dolores Murillo in 1960. They had two children, Kevin Patrick Grant and Mia Alexandra Grant. Don coached several teams in Foothill Little League, including the undefeated 1975 Red Sox. He was an avid back packer, and he especially enjoyed family holidays in Yosemite.
Anita passed away in 1998. He married Robin Ellyn Day (née Zelenitz) on February 14, 2009, and embraced her children Buffy Lee Bravo and Brendon James Faught. He brought much laughter and love to family gatherings. Don was famously fond of good food and fine wine, and he was never happier than when hosting a dinner at which a good time was had by all.
The arrangements for a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. Condolences may be sent to TedMayrFuneralHome.com.
