Edith was born April 27, 1928, to Raymond and Alice Hendricks in San Bernardino, California. She and her family moved to Santa Barbara when Edith was just a year old. Edith graduated from the Santa Barbara Knapp College of Nursing in 1950. She moved to New York City after graduation, where she met and married Larry Burtchby.
When Edith divorced, she and her children moved to Ventura. She started her career as a nurse with the Ventura County Health Department. Edith’s soft spoken demeanor and gentle nature were a comfort to the many children and parents she came in contact with. After 24 years of service, Edith retired. In retirement, she remained active serving as a Docent for the Ventura County Historical Society, volunteering for the Friends of the Library and being an active member of the Sierra Club.
Edith had a love of travel and adventure, having traveled to Europe, Mexico, Southeast Asia and much of the United States. She enjoyed visiting art museums in her travels as well as the Art Walks locally. Edith enjoyed dancing and you never had to ask her twice if she’d like to. Family occasions and spending time with her daughter, Rose, were always special to her.
Edith is preceded in her death by her son, David Burtchby and brother, Raymond Hendricks. She is survived by her daughter, Rose Burtchby and nephew, Steve Hendricks both of Ventura.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Cottage Inn and Livingston Memorial visiting nurses for their kindness and care.
A Celebration of Edith’s Life will take place on Sunday, October 20, 2013, 6:00 P.M. on the Ventura Pier.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura.
