ELMER FERBER – CAPTAIN, NYPD (RET.) formerly of Westbury, NY, died peacefully at the age of 95 at his home in Camarillo, CA on May 13, 2012. He is survived by his devoted wife, companion and caregiver of 62 years, Doris, loving sons Bob and Ken, cherished daughter-in-law Una, treasured granddaughter Alex, beloved nephew Steven and adoring nieces Linda, Debbie and Donna.
Born in Brooklyn, Elmer was forced to leave college to support his family, becoming a member of the famed NYPD class of 1940. At age 43 without a college degree and while a full-time Captain, he was accepted to Columbia University School of Law where he was awarded the Harlan Fiske Stone Fellowship for superior academic achievement. Graduating in 1963, he practiced law in New York, was an avid reader, fitness fanatic, tennis player and birder. Moving to California in 1980, he continued his interest in the law, wrote poetry and became a well-known actor in local theater. He was also involved in numerous nature conservation programs and was a fixture as a volunteer at Community Memorial Hospital.
His passion was law, his love was Doris, and his Sundays belonged to the New York Giants. But at his heart, he was always a New York cop.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, May 16, 1:00 P.M. at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, 5400 Valentine Rd, Ventura.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Rd., Ventura. Condolences may be left at TedMayrFuneralHome.com.
