He was born June 18, 1923, in Ontario, California to Howard Spencer and Esther DeVashee Whitlock. At the young age of 2 ½ they moved to Ventura. Dick attended local schools graduating from Ventura High School and Ventura College where he played basketball and was also an outstanding baseball player. He attended San Jose State University to play basketball but World War II broke out and he joined the Merchant Marines. Dick traveled many places around the world wherever the service took him. He was very proud of his country and was honored to place the Merchant Marines wreath every year at the cemetery memorial services. After the war Dick played on several local semi-pro baseball teams where he was usually the youngest player. In 1947, he married the love of his life, Ventura native, Phyllis Lorraine Andrade. Loving the Pierpont Beach they raised two wonderful sons, Howard and Dalton.
Dick was a member of the Ventura Elks Lodge #1430 for 66 years and also a member of the American Legion Post 339. He retired in 1985 after 39 years with Getty Oil Company. In his younger days he loved being near the ocean, loving to swim the Ventura Pier, and bodysurfing, at the end of Belfast Lane. The Sierras was a special place Dick went every year to fish for trout, and he loved to bar-b-que with family and friends. His special cat “Sheila” will miss him.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Esther Whitlock, his son Dalton Spencer Whitlock who passed away in 1995 at the age of 41, his granddaughter, Jean Lorraine who passed away in 2001 at the age of 17. They are now all reunited in heaven with no more pain, just perfect joy and beauty.
He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 64 years, Phyllis Whitlock of Ventura; son, Howard Glenn Whitlock (wife, Nancy) of Oceanside; brother, Roger Whitlock (wife, Janett) of Camarillo; two granddaughters, Natalie and Serena Whitlock of Dana Point as well as many loving nieces, nephews and in-laws, with a special thank you to a loving niece, Diane Ellis for all her help.
