Florence Multer, 90, a resident of Ventura since 1979, died in her home of cancer on Sunday, October 30, 2011. She was born September 21, 1921, in Regina Saskatchewan, Canada. Florence was a volunteer Care Giver for 12 years and member of the National Federation of Republican Women. She was of French Canadian background, first born and only surviving child of Omer and Berthe Pelchat. At the age of 1, her parents emigrated with her from Canada to California, where they made their home in Los Angeles. She studied the violin and attended Mount Saint Mary’s College in Brentwood on a music scholarship. Her music and studies were interrupted during WWII when she married Hugh J. Multer and started a family. Their first daughter Michele was born before Hugh was shipped overseas to fight in the European theater. Their second daughter Colleen was born after the war. After Hugh was discharged from the Army, their first home in California was ocean-front property on Long Beach’s Peninsula. After selling the beach house, they lived in Naples Long Beach while building a house on horse property in Rolling Hills, where they lived before moving to Ventura. Although Florence enjoyed 10 years of beach living and 25 years of the horsy set, she loved Ventura and its community, who supported her through the loss of her husband Hugh and daughter Colleen Scott of Ventura. She is survived by daughter, Michele Gabelich of Palos Verdes Estates; grandsons Stephen and Christopher Gabelich, grandson, Dustin Dean, and five great grandchildren.
A Funeral mass will take place Friday, November 4, 2011, 9:00 A.M., at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 3175 Telegraph Road, Ventura, with The Reverend Steve Davoren officiating.
