In 1933, as young teenagers, Hasel and Bert Vervoorn were introduced, they were married in 1941. Together they enjoyed traveling and had traveled to Hawaii several times as well as Alaska. Their travels also took them to the Netherlands, Thailand and Singapore, and a cruise through the Panama Canal. Before marriage Hasel worked during the summers on Catalina Island as a cashier at the Casino and loved to dance at the Casino after work. She also worked at the photo booth by the pier as well as the salt water taffy store.
Hasel worked for the City of Ventura Recreation Department as Activity Director at Westpark, retiring in 1964. She was active in Washington School PTA during the years her three children attended grades K through sixth grades. Hasel was also Brownie troop leader for her daughter. She enjoyed taking her children to the beach during the summers as well as many days fishing from the Ventura Pier. In later years she enjoyed spending a week every summer at Lake Lopez with her grandchildren.
Hasel was an artist and member of the Artist’s Guild. She had displayed many of her paintings throughout the years at various locations. It wasn’t until Alzheimer’s took away her ability and interest in painting that she was no longer able to enjoy her talent. Her family has been gifted with many of her wonderful paintings. She also enjoyed baking and decorating cakes for birthdays and various holidays and occasions.
