Jean C. Story, a resident of Ventura since 1956, passed away on July 18, peacefully at his home with family at his side. Jean was born in Long Beach on August 13, 1928. He served in the US Air Force from 1951 to 1953, graduated from CSLA with a degree in Mathematics in 1955, and worked as a Mathematician and Operations Research Analyst with the Navy for over 33 years. Jean was proud of having worked on a team that measured for the first time the shape of the Earth accurately, discovering a bump in the southern hemisphere. He fought against waste and inefficiency and was recognized for the quality of his work. Jean was a member of The Mathematical Association of America, the Association of Computing Machinery, and the American Production and Inventory Control Society. Jean loved to read and could be counted on to be found in the nearest book store whenever the family shopped. He was a very creative problem solver all of his life, loving mathematics and logic puzzles. For many years he was active in the Presbyterian Church, serving as chair of several committees. He and his wife were also proud sponsors of PFLAG and the NAMES Project. In his retirement, Jean volunteered with Food Share and working as a docent at the Ventura Courthouse. He loved animals and being with his grandchildren. Jean is survived by his children and their partners Jeff Story (Amy Marinacci), Jennifer Bowles (Steve Godeck) and Drew Story (Jennifer Thompson), grandchildren Ryan (David Eagle) and Joe Bowles (Amelia Ralston-Okabayashi), Grace Story and Gabriel Story. He was proceeded in death by his son Garth in 1993, and by his wife Lois just two months ago. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Ghost Ranch Foundation, HC77 Box 11, Abiquiu, NM 87510. At this time, no services are planned.
