A native Californian, John was born on August 8, 1938, in Los Angeles, CA to John and Eleanor Leming. John was a resident of Ventura County for 42 years, having moved from Sunland, CA in the early seventies.
John and his first wife, Rose, were fortunate to have made their home and raised their children in the communities of Sunland and Oxnard. They shared 27 years of marriage. Subsequently, John married Charlotte Kalenack in 1999. They were together for 14 years, sharing each other’s families over the years.
During his early adult years, John enjoyed fishing, boating and scuba diving, and was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Tujunga for over 20 years.
A self-employed insurance broker for 52 years with John H. Leming & Sons, John retired in 2007 to take advantage of his penchant for bridge and blue grass music. He was a long time member of the American Contract Bridge League, West Ventura County, Unit 547 as a Master bridge player. His blue grass contributions as a bass player covered 45 years of fun. Most recently, he was a member of a local group, the Silverstrand Blue Grass Band.
John was preceded in death by his daughter, Genevieve (Genny) Erickson, who succumbed to cancer at an early age.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; children and family, Eleanor (Ellie) Brandt-Leming, Louis (Louie) Leming, and Hazel Theys; son-in-law Dave Erickson; and John’s first wife, Rose Wentworth; stepchildren, Robb Kostman, Peter Kalenack, Randi Clark and Amy Domay; grandchildren, Michelle and Monica Erickson, Brandon and A.J. Medin, James DeSmith, and Ashley DeMatos; grandson-in-law, Max Vasquez; great-grandchildren, Max, Genevieve, Savannah, Andrew and Isaac Vasquez, and Conner Burch-Medin. He also leaves behind his brothers Doug Leming and wife, Cindy, Michael (Mike) Leming and his wife, Ann and their families.
A most sincere thank you to John’s health care providers, oncologist Dr. Kevin Chang and his most able assistant, Angie Rodriguez; the infusion team who administered such dedicated care; and all the ancillary support members involved in John’s treatment. You are wonderful!
