Jonah David Cantu died and went to heaven on the morning of July 20, 2014, after a 17 month battle with brain cancer. We know that for him to be absent from the body is to be present with The Lord! Jonah was born in Hillsboro, Oregon on September 1, 1998 to David Cantu and Rachel (Curfman) Cantu. Jonah was the oldest of two children—his brother, Gabriel Cantu. He was a student at Matilija Jr. High and Nordhoff High School in his short two year residence in the Ojai Valley.
Jonah loved skateboarding, spending time with his friends, blacksmithing, studying WWII history, and attending church and youth group at Reality Ventura. He loved to talk to veterans and sincerely appreciated the stories and wisdom they would share. In his short time in southern California, Jonah was able to meet and interact with many of his heroes in the skate community, experiencing an outpouring of love and generosity.
Jonah is survived by his parents, David and Rachel Cantu and his brother Gabriel of Ojai, CA; his maternal grandparents, Ron and Melody Curfman of Prosser, WA; his fraternal grandparents, Domingo and Thelma Cantu of McAllen TX; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who have become family.
Memorial Service honoring Jonah will be held on Friday, August 1, 2014, 2:00 pm, at Reality Church, 1954 Goodyear Ave. Ventura, CA 93003.
