Meredith Ruth Moyers

Meredith Ruth Moyers, 94, died peacefully on October 20, 2017 at The Palms at Bonaventure Assisted Living in Ventura, California. She was born July 29, 1923 to A. Edison and Ruth Moyers in Sidney, Iowa.

Meredith graduated from Guthrie Center High School in 1941 and attended the University of Iowa from 1941 to 1945. She majored in speech and classical language, and minored in English and drama. Meredith taught speech in several Iowa high schools from 1945-54 and worked for a year as a children's director and producer at KTVO Television Station in Ottumwa, Iowa. In 1956 Meredith moved to California for a position at San Bernardino High School. In 1961 she began a 23-year career at Ventura High School teaching English, speech and debate, television writing, Latin and performing arts. In 1963 Meredith earned a Master's degree in Guidance from the University of Southern California. She received a number of awards throughout her career including Ventura County Creative Teacher of the Year in 1975 and Ventura County Teacher of the Year in 1976.

Although she retired in 1984, Meredith continued to enjoy private tutoring and preparing students for college entrance exams for many years. She was an active member and past president of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary society for women educators, and a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Meredith was preceded in death by parents; brothers, Robert and Jack; and sister, Mary Jane Eckhardt. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Walt Eckhardt; nephews, Bruce Eckhardt (Julia Smith), Steve Eckhardt (Cheryl), John Moyers (Katherine); nieces, Mary Katherine (Jeff) Lee, Martha Moyers (Frank Dekata), Mary (Jim) Shiff, many great and great-great nieces and nephews; and her dear friend and caregiver Patsy (Phillip) Flores.

The family is grateful to Assisted Hospice and the kind, caring staff at The Palms.

A family service and burial will take place in Iowa City, Iowa at a future date.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Project Understanding or The First United Methodist Church Choir.
