Longtime Ventura resident, Michael V. Marquez, Jr., 67, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 12, 2016, at his home on Vista Del Mar Drive, after a year long battle with cancer. He was born on December 15, 1949, in Ventura, California, to Mike Victor Marquez, Sr., and Elvina (Elwell) Marquez. The ancestors of the Elwell family have been traced back to the early 1700’s and predate the earliest California missions.
Michael attended Sheridan Way School 1955-1962, De Anza 1962-1965, Ventura High School 1965-1968, Ventura College 1973-1975, and then received his Cytopathology accreditation at UCLA in 1975.
He married Susan Fryer and together they had one child, Michael Ryan Marquez. Michael and Susan were happily married for 43 years.
Michael was an avid surfer and began learning at Ventura Pier in 1963. He progressed his surfing ability and eventually became one of the longtime locals at C Street and Ventura Pipe. Most of his closest friends he met surfing and loved to share his “stoke” with everyone.
His passion was surfing nearly every day at Ventura Pipe, walking on the beach, riding his beach cruiser on the Ventura Promenade, watching his son’s Cal Poly San Luis Obispo tennis matches as a player and assistant coach and watching his son surf the Ventura Point breaks and Central Coast reefs.
Michael worked at Romero’s Mexican Food, Bait Shop on Ventura Pier and United States Postal Service.
He began his cytotechnologist career in Ventura at Automated Analytical Laboratories and through the years perfected his profession at Damien Laboratories, Ventura County Medical Center, Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Unilab Corporation, Quest Diagnostics Incorporated, Basil White & Son Trucking and finally finished his career at Community Memorial Hospital.
He is survived by his mother, Elvina Marquez; wife, Susan Fryer Marquez; sister, Linda Santillanes; and son, Michael Ryan Marquez.
