(Richard Eugene Herrin)Dick’s suffering ended on March 5, 2013, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. God blessed him with a wonderful life, even in the last days, as he recognized his favorite hymns and would attempt to sing them. Dick lived his life to the fullest, frequently sailing to the Channel Islands, building and flying radio controlled airplanes, gardening and spending spring times in Yosemite Valley. Dick also loved the Dodgers and Lakers, and rarely missed listening to their games on radio.
Dick was born in Ventura, Calif., on May 3, 1925, to parents, Carl Herbert and Phoebe Herrin. His love of sports had him playing baseball and basketball at Burbank and Hollywood high schools’. Dick registered for the Army at the age of 17 and served three years in the European Theater. Dick was rained as a medic and served on a hospital train, transporting wounded soldiers out of the battle field to ships in France. Dick returned to the states and picked up where he left off, going
back to school, playing sports and attending Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles. He met his lifelong partner and soulmate Lillian in a Sunday school class at the church. They married September 16, 1949, and eventually settled down in
Ventura in 1962. Their family began taking shape with the birth of their son, Craig. One year later, daughter, Carolyn,
was born. Dick was hired by the Edison Company as a Right of Way agent. Edison mostly wanted him for his baseball playing
ability. Dick retired in 1985 and stayed very busy traveling to New Zealand, Scotland and throughout the US. Dick’s final
place of residence was Somis Living Care Facility where he received excellent care. Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian, who passed away in 2003. The following verse exemplifies Dick’s Christian life; I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held at the Poinsettia Pavilion, 3451 Foothill Road, Ventura, Calif. 93003, on March 15, 2013, 11 a.m.
