On July 28, 2014, Lena died peacefully at the age of 96, at the end of a very long and fulfilling life. Lena, known to her friends as Lee, was born in Hillsborough, New Brunswick on April 5, 1918, a member of the Steeves family of New Brunswick, who settled there in 1766.
In 1945, she and her husband Truman Locheed arrived in Vernon and chose the beautiful location of Okanagan Landing to create a home.
There they raised their four daughters, and for decades to follow, the Lake House at Harbour Heights became the central family gathering
place for countless enjoyable family and holiday celebrations.
While living at Okanagan Landing, Lee and Truman operated a plumbing business and developed the very scenic subdivision of Harbour Heights. They enjoyed many close friendships among the Landing residents of those early years.
In 1959, when Eatons of Canada opened its doors in Vernon, Lee began her work there, becoming a
very efficient and popular manager of the Shoe Department. After Truman's passing in 1984, Lee settled
happily into retirement, beginning a 25 year Tai Chi practice, travelling and enjoying the company of her
second husband, Cecil Young. Her qualities of steadfastness, courage and determination touched the lives of all who had the
opportunity to know her.
She always moved forward to realize her dreams and her goals, no matter how large the obstacles may have appeared. During all of her days, the devoted and abiding love she provided for her children, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren became a precious gift to them, for which they will always be deeply grateful. Her family delighted in the excellent traditional meals she prepared with great skill and creativity well into her 90th year. Lees graciousness, patience and deep sense of beauty accompanied her to her final days, as did her love for her family.
Lee is predeceased by her eleven siblings and by her husbands, Truman Locheed and Cecil Young. She is survived by her loving daughters; Joelanne Stanfield, Laura-Lee Locheed, Lynae Locheed and Trudi Locheed and by her grandchildren; David Stanfield, Susan Kurliak, Scott Stanfield, Sandra Magyar, Brian Magyar, Ragan Niepel, Matthew Fisher, Nathan Fisher and Robekkah Ritchie. Her smile, her apple pies and her kindness will also be missed by her great grandchildren; Luke, Michael, Benjamin, Heather, Daniel, Elaina, Lauren and Emily.
A private cremation ceremony took place at the Vernon Funeral Chapel. A Celebration of Life is being planned for Monday, September 22, 2014 at Paddlewheel Park, final details to be announced in the future. As are her deepest wishes, Lee's ashes will find their final resting place in the Truman Dagnus
Locheed Provincial Park overlooking her home on Okanagan Lake.
In lieu of flowers, donations to The Schubert Center, 3503 30 Ave., Vernon would be appreciated.
Arrangements are in the care of Vernon Funeral Home 250 542 0155.
