Roy grew up and lived in Armstrong, and as a young man lived and worked in Salmon Arm as well as working for the Forest Service one summer. He met Donna at a friend’s wedding in Salmon Arm. He was the best man and Donna agreed with that. In 1962, Roy became a firefighter for the Vernon Fire Department, his tenure being 28 years, and as such, was also on the ambulance service for 14 years. He was also known for being someone with a big heart who would help anyone, any time he could. He loved meeting new people and often disappeared during family camping trips for long periods as he would meet new people and stay to chat with them.
His sense of humour was always something everyone enjoyed. He retired early from the Vernon Fire Department and ended up working for Bert Sauer Trucking, hauling tires for Kal Tire for at least a decade before he finally retired. His love of old farm equipment led him to be a member of the Spallumcheen Power Club and he was often seen working on his own antique tractor at the Club’s location at O’Keefe Ranch. Roy could often be seen on his tractor towing a trailer loaded with hay bales and giving visitors an old-fashioned ride around the ranch buildings just for the delight of meeting people and sharing the fun and maybe teaching a little bit about how farming was done in the past. The past 9 years or so saw Roy first lose his short term memory and then his long term memory. He lived for visits to Long Term Care from his wife, Donna.
Roy is survived by is survived by his two daughters, Heather (Bruce Harwood), 60, and Sandi (Noel Ratch), 57, and his grandson, Daniel Ratch, and leaves behind two siblings, his sister Ann Turner and his brother Bert Sauer.
