Peacefully and surrounded by her family, Adele Rose Wickett passed away on March 29, 2023 at the age of 80 after a lengthy journey with Alzheimer’s disease. She will be remembered by Garry, her husband of 59 years, her daughters Becky Tuffin (Simon), Mim Wickett, Lizabee Wickett and Esther Graham (Mark), her grandsons Jackson (Madeline), Samuel, Lucas, Thomas (Naeve), Reuben, Nicholas and Jonas and her sisters Merilyn Gordon and Lynette Croswell (Marvin.) Pre-deceased by great-grandaughter Sophia Tuffin.
Adele was born October 2, 1942 in Tillsonburg, Ontario to Frank and Grace Humphreys. Her father was a Baptist minister who moved his family to Burnaby, BC to pastor Alta Vista Baptist Church when Adele was six years old. She graduated from Burnaby South High School and went on to complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of British Columbia. It was at UBC where she met Garry and they were married in 1963. They started their life together in Vancouver then spent two years working in Manipal, India where Adele taught nursing and where they welcomed the birth of their first daughter. Upon returning to Canada in 1967, Adele supported Garry in his work with Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship in Victoria for two years. They relocated to Thetis Island to live and work at Pioneer Pacific Camp and moved back to Victoria, BC in 1972 where they raised their four daughters and have resided ever since.
Adele’s life was characterized by a strong faith and a commitment to Christian service. She filled many roles at camp, taught Sunday School to both pre-schoolers and adults in several church settings, co-managed the Logos Christian Bookstore with Garry, chaired both the Pacific Christian School Board and that school’s Education Committee and served on the board of the Equip Canada mission organization. She also wrote and edited the Island Christian Info newspaper for ten years where she was able to combine her exceptional communication skills, her broad knowledge, her passion for Christian ministry and her care for people.
Adele’s family will remember her as a loving wife and mother who encouraged her daughters to take risks, solve problems, work hard and serve others. She will also be remembered by many for her wit, her creativity, her vision and her exceptional organizational skills. She created a home that welcomed people warmly and generously and always made time for visits and meaningful conversations. She was dearly loved and will be missed by the many people who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, Adele would be pleased to know that donations were directed to the Dock Renewal Project at Pioneer Pacific Camp. https://www.pioneercamppacific.ca/adelewickett/
