Adeline - Mom, Granny, or BC Granny began life on January 31,1933 in Regina Saskatchewan when she was welcomed by parents Wilhelmina Frederika (Tonn) Buehler (1905-2000) and August Buehler (1902-1966) Adeline was the middle child of three girls Doreen Florentina (Buehler) Hoyer (1931-1975) and Audrey Wilma (Buehler) Wickham (1935 - 2024).
Mom had a life full of hard work, fun, joys, and tears. Her parents were true Saskatchewan pioneers. Her father immigrated from Germany to the Ukraine and eventually homesteaded in the Kronau area just south of Regina. Her mother's family immigrated from Poland to around the Humboldt SK (North West Territories) area via the United States.
Attending Wetmore Elementary School and Balfour Technical High School in Regina, Mom graduated with a Grade 12 Commercial Course. She worked in Regina for the RCMP at the Regina Barricks, Sears Canada, the Star Light Drive-In, and the Public Service Commission of Saskatchewan in the Training and Development Branch. She excelled in Math and was always able to work bookkeeping into her jobs as she loved math. Her strong work ethic, attention to detail and her ability to work well with others paid back in huge dividends with many life long friends.
Mom met Leonard Harold Hoyer (1930 - 2002) when she was 16 years old (about 1949) at the Grace Lutheran Church Group. She met Dad through her sister Doreen who was dating and eventually married Benno Hoyer - Dad's brother. They married in 1954, moved to the Hoyer family farm near Edenwold SK. and welcomed their children Sharon Lynn (Hoyer) Bierd -1955, Douglas Harold Hoyer - 1957, and Alan Richard Hoyer - 1962 to their family. In 1963, the family moved to Regina and became city folk!
Life was busy - Dad became an Interprovincial Heavy Duty Mechanic, Mom kept the house running and tried her best to ride herd over three very busy kids. She did work part-time outside the home for a break from us kids. There were plenty of camping and fishing trips and owning rental property helped build their pension plan. As the children grew up, got married and started their own lives, Mom and Dad travelled - Mom went on trips with Aunty Audrey and Granny Buehler to Spain and the Caribbean. Dad and Mom did a 30 day whirlwind bus grip to see Europe and had a blast with Herb and Jeannette Tobias. Seriously, they were everywhere in Europe! Hawaii, Alaska, Florida were all destinations they enjoyed.
British Columbia always called Dad and in 1997 they made the move to Ladysmith, British Columbia. While sad to leave Granny Buehler, Mom would say that living in Ladysmith was the best years of her life. Mom became the bookkeeper for their Condo complex, she played Crib at the Legion and Seniors Center, scored an elusive 29 in Crib and made many life long friends. She worked at the Ladysmith Thrift Store and the Hospital Auxiliary Garden, enjoyed coffee at McDonalds, Chinese food or any restaurant meal whenever the occasion allowed, and loved the monthly birthday celebrations!
Mom made a milestone decision in 2013 to move to Victoria BC. While she missed her dear friends, she was finding it increasingly more challenging to live independently. She initially moved into the Cedars and then into The Dawson. She participated fully in her new home and if we wanted to see her we needed to make an appointment! She made many friends, always set the table for the Social Meals held at the Cedars, was the leader of the crib club at the Dawson, was an active participant in every outing and the Christmas Bazaar. She was faithful to her faith, attended weekly services at The Dawson and was able to reconnect with Paster Dan (Fournier) who was her Paster and good friend in Ladysmith.
She was very proud of her grandchildren. They were the apple of her eye. She had two sets - the older gang born in Regina and living in BC and the younger kids born and living in Regina. Mitchell Cartwright Bierd (1982 -) was the first and they had a very special bond that lasted until her passing. Lauren Kathleen Bierd (1989 -) joined the Bierd family and Granny always wished for Lauren to find a loving partner.
She wanted to ensure her Regina grandchildren knew her and travelled every year to visit Quin Alan Hoyer ( 1996 - ) and Keenan Richard Hoyer (2000 - ). She travelled independently for many years to Regina to visit the boys and in later years she was accompanied by Sharon. She babysat the kids during winter vacations, went camping with the kids, attended Keenan's football games and was at their High School Graduations and oh did I mention Chinese food was always involved! She always wished that Al would move to the Island with his boys. It is really unfortunate that she vaguely understood that Keenan moved to Victoria to attend University. She would have been so proud.
As Dementia took hold, Mom moved to the Heights at Mount View in 2022. She was described as a feisty resident whom the care aids loved. She participated in a whole host of activities, went on outings, got her nails painted and loved lipstick! Mitchell, her #1 grandson visited her faithfully and always had treats - Hawkins Cheezies, chips, coke, McDonald's, and Sushi were her favorites. Mitchell always told her that she took care of him when he was little and it was his turn to take care of her.
Mom joined her heavenly family in her forever home on October 6, 2024.
The whole family was together to celebrate Keenan's Fall Convocation from the University of Victoria - Engineering - Civil in November and the 13th, 2024 was chosen to have her graveside memorial service at the Cedar Memorial Gardens. It was a wonderful service officiated by Pastor Dan and his wife which was very special. In addition to her family, long time friends Vera, Pauline and Joan helped send her on her way. The day closed with a great feast- you guessed it - Chinese food at the Driftwood Chinese Food Restaurant in Nanaimo.
Rest in peace - with all our love your family.
