Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Al leaves behind his ‘big sisters’ Barb Grant (Vancouver) and Noreen Franklin (London), as well as his wife Janette. He embraced his new British (Lancashire) family with enthusiasm and thought bacon butties were the best! Al was always there for everyone in the family.
Al had an eclectic career as a gifted administrator but was happiest when working in Christian ministry.
From Edmonton Northlands, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in North Carolina and finally settling on the island, first in Victoria, where his love of Christmas resulted in the formation of the Victorian Christmas Festival, and then in Sidney, Al was always busy in board positions where his vision and passion for the future were evident to all who knew him.
Al was also co-owner of Helping Hands PSS Ltd (seniors’ home support) with his wife Janette. He was more than happy handing out birthday presents and singing ‘happy birthday’ to clients and staff alike –always ready to encourage those around him with his kindness, warmth, gentle spirit and great sense of humour.
Al loved his football (Edmonton Elks) and played a lot at college level (that’s probably what wrecked his knees). He also loved birds and enjoyed sitting in the back yard and listening to the bird songs.
Al was a big man with a big heart – always serving, rarely complaining (except about taxes!) and just a super guy to know and love.
We miss Al immensely but rejoice that he is now ‘forever with the Lord’.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday 26 October, 2 pm at Saanichton Bible Fellowship. Condolences may be offered at www.firstmemorialsaanich.com Donations to Haven Pregnancy Support Clinic or Victoria Lighthouse Ministry.
