Victoria, BC – Arthur John Dow passed peacefully with family at his side on September 10, 2018. Born on July 30, 1946 in Glasgow, Scotland, Art is predeceased by his parents Walter and Marion.
He is survived by his loving wife, friend and protector, Elizabeth; his two sons James (Tara) and William (Nina); his siblings James and Carol; his four grand children Connor, Maddison, Bethany and Graeme; and his nephews and nieces Ryan, Kristeen, Cindy and Michael.
Art was a well respected teacher for many years in Victoria having taught elementary, junior high and post-secondary. An advocate for the sciences, he was instrumental in running the Vancouver Island Science Fair Competition in the 1970’s and 1980’s. He never considered himself to be a “creative” person, but to his many students, his approach to teaching and education was both creative and inspirational.
Art was known for his dry wit and understated sense of humour – he could heckle and best many a comedian – just ask his niece. Those who knew him well knew of his love of Neil Diamond and his extensive collection of records and memorabilia (his sons will have to arm wrestle for the collection).
But he his best known for his love, loyalty and commitment to his family.
As per his wishes, there will be no service or memorial. In lieu of flowers, donations to Parkinson Canada or Canadian Mental Health Association would be appreciated by the family.
