Avtar was born in Nangal Kalan, India, where he developed the strong work ethic that he displayed his entire life. His early experiences farming for a living were instrumental in shaping who he became as a father and grandfather later in life. When it came time to relocate his young family to Canada, that sense of duty and responsibility carried over to his first jobs in Victoria, BC.
From flower picking to working at a lumber mill, he never backed down from adversity. When health problems struck in mid-life, he made sure to put his hard work ethic to other uses, such as maintaining a beautiful garden, performing sewa at the Gurdwara and sticking to a rigid fitness routine. Papaji had stated as recently as a few months ago that his family, long chats with friends and numerous walks in the park were the secrets to his longevity.
Papaji was blessed to see all of his children and grandchildren settle into their own families and create new lives. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy and he never hesitated to tell them so. Whether it was teaching someone how to drive, or watching an episode of “Three’s Company” with them, his presence and support were cherished by those that had the privilege to call him “Papa.” He looked forward to their visits, their hugs and their laughter. After the passing of his beloved wife during Covid, Papaji navigated a new normal without her, and as with everything else, did so with positivity and grace. The integrity, wisdom, generosity and optimism he exhibited in all aspects of his life will inevitably be his greatest legacy.
Avtar is predeceased by his parents, brothers and sister, and wife, Surjit K. Bains, as well as many beloved friends. He is lovingly survived by his son Bagicha (Kulvinder) Bains, daughters Jaswinder (Late Surinder Singh) Mann, Kashmir (Harinder) Bassi, and Jasbir (Surinder) Basi, 12 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren, as well as extended family and friends.
