Barbara passed away on Sunday, November 24th in Victoria, BC. She was born in Halkirk, Caithness, Scotland on August 31, 1933. She was predeceased by her first husband, Alexander (Sandy) Henderson in 1991 and her second husband, Vincent Bennett in 2016. She will be sadly missed by her daughter Jennifer, son-in-law Vince and grandson Brendan. She was predeceased by her son Houstan in 2015. She is lovingly remembered by many family members in both Canada, Scotland and Ireland.
Barbara emigrated to Canada with her husband Sandy and young daughter Jennifer in 1957. The family initially settled in Edmonton to start their new life in Canada. In 1960 they adopted their son Houstan.
The family took their first trip to the West Coast in 1965 and immediately fell in love with the landscape and the weather so relocated to Maple Ridge soon after returning home.
Barbara was always up for an adventure and with her husband, Sandy, embarked on many. They operated a corner grocery store in Edmonton, owned and operated an antique store in Maple Ridge, bought and ran a motel in the Okanagan, and purchased an historic home and operated it as a bed and breakfast in Nova Scotia.
She had an eagle eye for a bargain and was one of the original "garage sale" groupies in the 70's. Although she was thrifty she was kind and generous to all.
In her later years, along with her husband Vince, she became a world traveller. Together they visited Russia, China, Cuba, Mexico, Europe, England, Ireland, Scotland, Alaska and the US.
Although she lived most of her life in Canada, Barbara was very proud of her Scottish heritage, never lost her Caithness accent and always enjoyed "a good cup of tea".
A private family celebration of life will be held in the New Year.
The family would like to thank the amazing staff at the Kiwanis Pavillion where Barbara resided for the past two years for their excellent care and kindness.
