Carol Joyce Lattey (née Hickey) was born on July 12, 1944, in Nova Scotia, Canada, and passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026, following complications from heart surgery with her family by her side.
Carol was a strong and determined woman with a true pioneer spirit. Unafraid to challenge convention, she earned her Class 1 Truck Driver’s Licence in 1977—an extraordinary achievement for a woman in the small, traditional town of Revelstoke, BC. When employment in trucking proved difficult, Carol forged a new path with the CP Rail, becoming the first female brakewoman in BC. Her courage, resilience, and work ethic carried her through a remarkable 30-year career as a train conductor, where she continually defied gender barriers in a male-dominated industry.
In retirement, Carol embraced a slower pace of life, finding joy in cooking, baking, reading, and tending to her greenhouse, which she used to can and preserve the fruits of her own labour.
Carol is survived by her partner, Rod; her daughters, Melanie (Mike), Maureen (Colin), and Gerda (Mike); her grandchildren, Rosie, Morgan, and Rylan; her siblings, Hal (Wendy) and Yvonne; and her nieces and nephews, Sheryl, Kim, Terry, and Kevin. She joins her sister, Janet, and her beloved grandson, Jari, on the other side.
A Celebration of Life will occur at a later date.
