Known to many as Jungle, Deryck passed away at home after a period of declining health. Born and raised in Victoria, he was predeceased by his loving parents, George and Jean. He is survived by: sons Kelsey and Matthew and their mom Vicky, Brother Dale (Sharon), and nephews Aaron and Kris.
The nickname Jungle was given to him by a co-worker when he was employed at the loading dock of Woodward's Mayfair in his late teens. At the time of the cartoon character George of the Jungle, Deryck was known on occasion to swing front to back across the roofs of trailers as they were being unloaded. Needless to say, the name stuck and was fittingly embraced by him as his persona evolved.
During his younger years, friends described him as gregarious to the max with a carefree attitude and boundless energy. A hard worker, he had many employment stops including; logging on North Vancouver Island and Terrace, Victoria Tank Service, and Leier Construction.
He was, however, most proud of his time at Yarrows and the shipyards where his dad was a highly regarded mainstay for many years.
Many of Deryck's hobbies and interests involved cars and sports. As a big NASCAR enthusiast, a major highlight was a trip to the Daytona 500. He was a diehard Oakland Raiders fan, and a good afternoon would be sharing a Lucky with pals following the NFL or races.
Many thanks to his landladies and his Granville neighbours for their friendship and support over the past 15 years. We will miss Deryck's infectious spirit, booming voice, and welcoming smile.
His life included many pathways, chapters, and ups and downs, but there is no denying he was one of a kind. A final farewell from Jungle to all who knew him:
HUDDY! HUDDY!
