passed away on Monday, October 24, 2022.
Great Grandma Dee was born in 1927 in Kitchener, Ontario and was the youngest of five children. She graduated from the Ontario Agricultural College (now University of Guelph) in 1952 for her Bachelor of Science degree and was one of just four women in a class of more than seventy men. Dee was awarded a scholarship to Smith College, Massachusetts, but got married before finishing and came back to live in northern Ontario.
Dee moved with her family to Vancouver in 1965 and she settled down to be a housewife to raise three children before going back to finish her Master of Science degree at UBC (1970). She became one of the first female Landscape Architects in BC and finished her career at Westcoast Energy in Vancouver, as Environmental Coordinator on energy development projects.
Dee was predeceased by Bill Morris, wildlife biologist, in 1988.
Dee was a life-long illustrator and painter and travelled extensively, including a solo round-the-world trip. At the African safari camp in Zimbabwe, she wrote about being kept awake at night by elephants munching outside her tent. Her technical drawing skills can be seen in her watercolour paintings of old Vancouver houses and corner grocery stores.
After a stroke in 2002, which affected her speech and mobility, Doris moved to Victoria, where she lived for 20 years before her death on October 24, 2022, at age 95.
Dee is survived by her three children: Mary (John), Stephen (Mary de) and Nancy, four grandchildren (Will, Reed (Akask), Deb and Elaine) and one great-granddaughter Inanna. Dee is also survived by two step-grandchildren Jackson (Daiana) and Lindsay (Sean), and three step-great-grandchildren Charlotte, Jamie, and Julian.
Dee was also close with niece Janis and great-niece Valerie, niece Enid (Ken) and long-time friend from OAC days, Erna.
Mum requested donations in her memory to the Victoria Stroke Recovery Association where she was an active member for many years.
