Together, Gurmej and Gurdev built their life in Victoria, raising their 4 children. Gurmej worked at the lumber mill for over 30 years and continued to work in other fields until the age of 72, when he was finally convinced by his family to retire. Through his hard work and fearless work ethic, he provided for his family and built the house of his dreams. His passion for cars, gardening and keeping his lawn looking perfect kept him busy after retirement.
Gurmej’s attention to detail was unmatched, which is a trait that he leaves behind in each of his children. Punctuality was just as important to him and he was always lecturing everyone about being on time since his dad always taught him to be early as time doesn’t stop for anyone. Gurmej also taught his children the value of giving every job over 100% and never leaving anything unfinished.
In his later years, Gurmej especially enjoyed watching Kevin take over all of his outdoor hobbies as this brought a big smile to his face. He also spent the last decade of his life watching his grandchildren grow through various milestones, which was the most rewarding thing for him as his family was his pride and joy. During their 64 years together, Gurmej and Gurdev were by each other’s side every step of the way, showing their family the values of loyalty, perseverance and resilience. No matter how many times Gurmej became ill, Gurdev was by his side bringing him back to full health with her love and amazing cooking. Gurmej spent his life caring for and supporting his entire family.
Gurmej passed away peacefully at the age of 83 at Royal Jubilee Hospital on Thursday, July 17, 2025 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Gurdev Kaur Dosanjh and his children Manjit (Sukhninder), Lakhbir (Gurdeep), Amardeep (Sandy) and Lakhvinder Kevin (Jasleen). He is also survived by his nine grandchildren and his two great grandchildren. Gurmej was predeceased by his parents, Sher Singh and Bhajan Kaur Dosanjh.
