Born in Winnipeg Manitoba, Hugh grew up visiting the family farm near Sinclair and spending summers at Victoria Beach. He attended the University of Manitoba earning a Bachelor of Economics (1977) and a law degree (1980). He practiced law in Neepawa, Brandon, and Morden, before joining the Land Titles Office in Winnipeg. Later, he moved to Vancouver Island, and took over the real estate law practice of David Wright, serving the Cowichan Valley for many years.
Hugh was a devoted father to his four children—Chloe, Tessa, Simon, and Olive, and a proud grandfather to Matilda. He also leaves behind his brother David, nieces and nephews, Matthew, Zane, Grace, and Mia, and will be greatly missed by all. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, as well as his faithful friend and tormentor, The Bishop. In addition to his immediate family, Hugh leaves behind many friends and neighbors in Fernwood.
Hugh’s calm demeanor, wry sense of humor, and curious spirit touched everyone that knew him. He was an avid reader who cherished everything from the pages of the New York Review of Books to sheet music for percussion instruments and guitar. He could nurture anything, whether plant or animal, and always made room for people to be themselves.
A celebration of Hugh’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the BC Children’s Hospital or the charity of your choice.
