February 15, 1943 – June 24, 2025
With deep sadness, we announce the passing of John Baxter Mitchell on June 24, 2025. With his beloved family at his side, John left peacefully in the loving hands of God.
John will be remembered as an extraordinary husband, inspirational father, adoring grandad, loyal brother, and the kindest of friends. Born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, and raised in Stellarton and later Dartmouth, he was the eldest of four sons to John and Hazel Mitchell. From a young age, he displayed a spirit of service and leadership, active in the Boy Scouts of Canada—a passion that would later see him earn his Gilwell in leadership as a trainer and serve as a devoted Cub Scout Leader in Victoria.
John trained as a photogrammetrist in Nova Scotia, a skill that brought him west to Vancouver in 1967. It was there he met Sheila, the love of his life. They married in April 1968 and soon settled in Victoria, BC, where they made a home and raised their twin sons, Brian and Ian. Their marriage was a deep and abiding partnership—more than best friends, they were soulmates whose love was truly unbreakable.
John dedicated 37 years to mapping British Columbia, first with Lockwood Survey Corporation and later with the provincial government, doing this several times over as the province grew. Alongside his professional life, he poured himself into his family and community. A teacher at heart, John found joy in coaching his sons in sports, volunteering in schools, leading Scouts, and always being present—whether for a game of catch, school project help, or a knot-tying lesson.
When he became “Grandad,” John’s joy only deepened. He cherished every moment with his grandchildren—Liam, Noah, and Samantha—each one holding a special place in his heart. He continued to lead by example, showing them the importance of kindness, patience, and service.
A man of strong faith, John was deeply involved with St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Victoria. Over the years, he served as an Elder, Sunday School teacher, committee chair, event organizer, photographer, and faithful friend to many within the congregation. His contributions—quiet, steadfast, and humble—left a lasting impact.
Photography was another lifelong passion. Whether on a walk, in the garden, at family gatherings, or capturing moments for the church, John was rarely without a camera. His photographs documented a life of love, joy, and presence.
In 2019, John was diagnosed with dementia mixed with Alzheimer’s. Even as the illness progressed, he continued to enjoy life’s moments—thanks in large part to the loving care of Sheila, his “Chief” caregiver, his family, and the support of R.J. Angels Care. His final days were marked by peace and dignity, with heartfelt thanks to the dedicated teams at BC Ambulance, Victoria General Hospital’s ER and 4th floor staff.
John leaves behind a legacy of devotion, service, integrity, and humour. He was a man who gave fully of himself and never asked for anything in return. His memory will be forever cherished by his wife of 57 years, Sheila; sons Brian (Kerri) and Ian (Kristin); grandchildren Liam, Noah, and Samantha; brothers David, Jim (Debbie), and Tom (Sylvia); brother-in-law Michael McCarten
(Rosemary); niece Peggy (Luke); nephews David (Stacey) and Corey; and many extended family and lifelong friends.
He lived his life with compassion, grace, and quiet strength. He was a man of faith, a devoted family man, a gifted friend, and a helper to all.
We honour John Mitchell not only for the life he lived but for the love he gave.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Saturday, July 26th at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 680 Courtney St., Victoria, BC, V8W 1C1, or The Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, at https://alzheimer.ca/en
