One of two children of Frank and Elsie Johns, she moved to Cloverdale, British Columba whilst very young and, after graduating high school there, found her way to Nelson, British Columbia where she met her husband George (Brick). They married in Cloverdale in August of 1954 before moving to Victoria, British Columbia in 1955 following the birth of their first child.
Joyce had a quiet strength about her - essential in raising 3 boys, much of the time alone when George was at sea for extended periods.
Her entire working life was spent as an administrative assistant with the Toronto Dominion Bank where she was much valued for her skill in crafting correspondence. She had a life long affinity for words, doing at least one crossword puzzle (sometime even the NY Times) every day, and enjoyed Scrabble (winning more often than not). An avid reader, mainly of mysteries, she also devoted many hours to crafting Shillcraft rugs and playing the piano (Für Elise being a favourite).
She was also a well loved and long standing (with over two decades of service starting in 1993) volunteer at the Maritime Museum of British Columbia, and also volunteered at the Oak Bay Lodge.
A resident of Victoria since 1955, she was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, George, in 2019 and is survived by her three sons: Eric (Kristin), Kirk, and Scott (Heather). They are deeply grateful for the care and support provided by the staff of Beckley Farm Lodge.
