It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of a wonderful mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt. Kay passed away in Palliative Care at Saanich Peninsula Hospital after a struggle with dementia, and a short battle with cancer.
Kay was born in Holdfast, Saskatchewan to Jack and Mary (Gelsinger) Hungle, and was one of nine siblings. The family relocated to Regina in the early 1940’s where Kay met and married her husband Ken.
They moved to Victoria in 1975, where Kay began her forty year retail career working for Woolco (Town and Country Shopping Centre), which subsequently became a Walmart (Uptown). Kay finally retired from working life in 2014, at the young age of eighty years. She later moved to a residence in the community of Brentwood Bay.
Kay and Ken were avid 5-pin bowlers, belonging to multiple different leagues in both Regina and Victoria, forming many friendships over the years. Of note, was that Kay held one of the highest averages for female bowlers in both cities.
To help fill her time after the passing of her husband Ken in 1990, Kay also became interested in many other hobbies and activities. She re-discovered her enjoyment of golf, took part in aerobics classes, line-dancing, did some overseas travel, went for countless ‘coffee breaks’ with family/friends, attended many dinners with her golf and Hospice friends, and became involved in activities at Sacred Heart Parish.
Kay was predeceased by her husband Ken; great-granddaughter Teydan; grandson Michael; daughter-in-law Cindy; siblings Gus, Con, Anne, Bertha, Frances, Chris, Audrey, and Diane. She is survived by her children, Randy (Sandra), Kenny, and Greg (Kristine); five grandchildren Chris (Ciara), Nathan, Janelle (Ryan), Jazmine and Cienna; four great-grandchildren; Thian, Tynan, Tristan, and Magdalena; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
The family would like to thank the Palliative Care Unit staff at Saanich Peninsula Hospital for their care and compassion.
A funeral mass will be held Thursday, March 6th at Sacred Heart Parish in Victoria, at 1:00 p.m.
Donations in Kay’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
