Kathryn Jayne Karst

After a valiant battle with a brief illness, Kathy passed away peacefully at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC on March 1, 2024. She was born at the same hospital on March 22, 1957, and spent her formative years in Oak Bay. Kathy attended Monterey Elementary and Oak Bay High School before pursuing her passion for law at the University of Victoria, where she graduated with honours.

Kathy's life was marked by her unwavering determination, despite being diagnosed with Turner's syndrome in her childhood. Her petite stature and health challenges never hindered her ambitions; rather, they fueled her resolve to pursue her dreams. Kathy's brilliance was evident from her youth, as showcased by her participation as a contestant on the Reach for the Top academic quiz competition in 1975.

Throughout her career as a lawyer, Kathy served in various capacities in both Victoria and predominantly in Vancouver. She was deeply involved in her community, dedicating her time to volunteering at church and St. Paul’s Hospital in the West End of Vancouver. In 2019, she returned to Victoria to care for her mother, becoming her trusted companion. Despite facing her own health struggles, Kathy approached life with grace and resilience.

Sadly, a recent illness proved insurmountable for this courageous soul. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Oak Bay Fire Department, the team of paramedics, and the dedicated staff of RJH Emergency and ICU for their tireless efforts and compassionate care. There are no words that can adequately express the gratitude that we have for these healthcare heros.

She is survived by her loving mother Glenna Drummond and sisters Janet Ricciuti (Dave), Rosemary Schrauwen (Ken); nephew Dominic Ricciuti (Drue); and a multitude of cherished family members and friends.

A Memorial Tea is scheduled for Saturday, May 11, 2024, from 1 pm to 3 pm at First Memorial Funeral Services 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC V8Y 1B4. Family and friends are invited to attend to raise a glass, and pay tribute to her memory.
