Kurt Wilhelm Sprungmann

It is with deep sadness, the passing of our dad and “Opa” Kurt W. Sprungmann, age 93 on August 16, 2022. Predeceased by his loving wife, Miryam and survived by his two sons Mark and Luke (Rhonda) and three grandchildren Alexander, Sarah and Chantal. Cousins in the Yukon and German and Swiss family.

He spent his last few months in the care of Saanich Peninsula Extended Care Hospital. We would like to thank all the staff that provided Kurt with great care and compassion.

Kurt was born in Essen, Germany on November 13, 1928. He emigrated to Canada in 1954, where he was reunited with his cousin Margaret Haase and her husband Gerhard Haase. They worked a number of odd jobs generally in the agricultural field. In the winters, they cut wood and traveled to other parts of Canada looking for work. Kurt worked in nine Canadian provinces over the years.

On December 26, 1959, Kurt married Miryam T. Stahl in Edmonton. At this point, both Kurt and Miryam went back to school. Kurt focused on sciences and Miryam on accounting. In the later part of 1968, they moved to Pinawa, Manitoba. Kurt went to work at AECL (Atomic Energy of Canada Limited) in the research department of Internal Damping Technology. In Pinawa, Kurt enjoyed the outdoors with his family: from cross-country skiing in the winter to sailing in the summer. They spent 22 years in Pinawa. Then in 1991, Miryam and Kurt retired to Brentwood Bay, Vancouver Island.

During retirement, Kurt and Miryam would travel and visit their families in Switzerland and Germany. One of their favourite activities was going out weekly with the local cycling group. They took this experience on the road with cycling trips to the Napa Valley and parts of France, Germany and Switzerland. Kurt only stopped cycling at age 90.

Kurt had a great passion for life and he enjoyed talking to his coffee buddies on Friday mornings. He will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Kurt’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
