Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Larry was raised by his Granny Charlotte. His Uncle Hughey and Aunt Ada were a big part of his life growing up on the Prairies and he loved them dearly. He moved to Victoria in his early teen years and started his logging career when he was 17 years old.
Known as “Larry The Logger” he worked many years in the Sooke Hills as a Grapple Yarder. He also spent time Logging in the Queen Charlotte Islands and Northern Vancouver Island. He made many life-long friends during this time and was loved by many of his crew who all have a special bond and lasting memories. Later in life Larry retired from Logging and took up work as a Used Car Salesman. The staff at Howie’s Car Corral hold a special place in his heart. He had a lot of stories to tell and good fun times working with Howie and the team.
Larry enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and his dog Bessie. Woodworking and carving were his hobbies; trips to Williams Lake to see his best friend and logger-buddy Güenter and his wife Bernie, or fishing with his Brother-in-Law Dave were always memorable times for him. Sunday trips to browse the Flea Market with long time buddy Mike & brother-n-law, Dan were always fun times. He enjoyed taking the dog for walks to his favourite beaches in Metchosin and Matheson Lake, and settling down for the evening with a giant bowl of ice cream.
Larry’s pets were also very important and special to him; Pete his Myna bird, Cookie the cat, Tina the Dachshund, Chloe the Golden Retriever, Phoebe the cat and his faithful and loving dog Bessie, another Golden Retriever.
As he rests in peace we will miss his many stories, his outrageous witty humor, one liners and non-stop jokes. But most of all we will miss the kind, caring and loving man and Father that he was. Larry is survived by his beloved wife and best friend Nancy, daughter Coreen (son-in-law Ken) and son Aaron; his grandchildren, Cody, Emily and Jessica; Dan, Leah & April Juhlke; Shane Ferguson; brother Andy and sisters Lorrette and Michelle; his large McBride family in Moose Jaw, and many other family members.
We wish to send a special thank you to the nurses in the ER and 6AS and Dr. Valeria Stoynova at Victoria General for the amazing care provided during Larry’s time there.
A Celebration of Larry’s life will take place on Thursday, August 30th, 2018 at 2:00pm at First Memorial Funeral Services 4725 Falaise Drive. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BCSPCA in Larry’s honour.
