Every month mum regaled fellow residents at Luther Court with tales of her own misadventures, major events of the past 100 years, or local history. Many of her talks were based on articles she wrote for the Times Colonist Islander. Sadly, Lynette’s Musings came to an end April 27, 2023.
Mum spent the first half of her life accomplishing a lot with meagre resources to raise daughter Terry, and ‘baby boy’ Mark (Carol). Mum and dad (Ken), her soulmate of 72 years who died in 2020, were hands-on, proud grandparents of Colleen, Lindsay and Heather. They treasured every opportunity to interact with their beloved granddaughters and marvelled at having great grandchildren Kyler, Cora, James, Juliet, Oliver, Evan and Noelle. Mum was thrilled to see not only her ‘girls’ but almost all of her great grandchildren earlier this year. Mum and dad poured blood, sweat, laughter and tears into the home they built in Saanich in 1947 on land they cleared themselves. Maintaining its sprawling garden kept mum fit. She said she didn’t need a gym or a therapist because gardening was the best therapy.
When she and dad retired, they indulged in many European vacations, which, because she was a keen observer of human nature, provided some of the grist for her newly discovered love of writing. She often initiated conversations with strangers many of whom became lifelong friends.
A formidable ‘scrabbler’, mum was proud of her personal best score of ‘daiquiri’ on a triple triple. She enjoyed a refreshing G&T on a hot summer day, British TV, A&W burgers, a cold beer and time spent with (recalcitrant) Welsh Corgi ‘Miller’ when he still roamed this earth. A Johnny Cash fan, mum found new meaning and joy and truth in his rendition of Swing Low Sweet Chariot as she neared her end. Our whole family appreciates the great care and support provided by Dr. Lisa Veres and is truly, eternally, grateful to staff and residents at Luther Court for daily demonstrating extraordinary love and compassion. Donations in mum’s memory may be made to the Luther Court Society.
