Our dear Mum and Nanny passed away after a long illness on March 21, 2021. Predeceased by her loving husband Kenneth, she is survived by her beloved sons Gavin and Colin, her daughter-in-law Nancy, her granddaughters Nova, Katie and Laurel, three nieces, a nephew and their families. Born December 18, 1928 in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland to William and Mary Robertson, Mum was the youngest of three children. She immigrated to Canada in 1952, and made her way to Vancouver where she worked for Trans Canada Airlines (Air Canada), and met and married Ken in 1957. They moved to Victoria the following year, and never wanted to live anywhere else. Mum worked at Monterey Elementary in the 1960s as school secretary, and fondly remembered the children as they grew into young adults in Oak Bay. After Ken’s retirement, they travelled widely throughout North America in their motorhome, and toured Mexico, Europe, and Southeast Asia. Mum showed her determination and character in South Africa by ensuring a thief received a good beating with her handbag as he tried to steal her camera! Mum loved her family both here and in Scotland, and adored being a grandmother, attending dance recitals, basketball, soccer and softball games, and holding many sleepovers and baking sessions. She was a wonderful hostess to friends for bridge and book club, parties and many other happy occasions with family and friends in their lovely homes in Oak Bay and Broadmead. We will fondly remember her tea and shortbread, her black current jam and marmalade, her beautiful roses and her love of classical music and antiques. She had a full and happy life, and was a strong willed, determined and independent Scot who equally loved her adopted country. We are grateful for her life with us, and sure that she and Ken are together again, having a wee dram. The family thanks the following for their care and assistance to Mum after Dad’s passing: her care assistant Maureen Magee, the staff of Carlton House and Serenity Home Care while Mum lived at Carlton House, and the exceptional staff at Sunrise of Victoria during her time there. Special thanks and appreciation for the care provided over the years by Drs. Fast, Leggatt and Buie, and the wonderful doctors, nurses, care aids and support staff of Royal Jubilee Hospital on 5th and 6th South. Donations in Mum’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or the Victoria Hospitals Foundation. A celebration of life will be held at a future date. Condolences may be offered online to the family at www.dignitymemorial.com.
